Makeeha Ali - Question One

In what ways does your media product, use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Our media product displays various conventions of real media products which are recognisable to the public, however we have incorporated elements which challenge forms and conventions of media products in order create a unique product which will attract our target audience. After our audience research we came to a decision to make our media product of the horror genre.

TRAILER
Our trailer displays conventions of the horror genre, by embedding aspects which we link to a horror film we were able to develop typical ideas generated through our product research.

Cast/Characters
The horror genre usually presents a naive teenager who commonly plays the role of the victim. A young girl, of a friendly personality that possesses the stereotypical appearance of a 'damsel in distress', with blonde hair and consists of girly sartorial codes. In order to convey a realistic approach to our media product we also conformed to the stereotypical 'victim girl' for our movie.

we took in to consideration appearance and stereotypes when casting for our media product.

  • The image on the left side is from the popular horror movie 'Scream 4'. Her sartorial codes are casual but stylish giving the indication that she takes care of her appearance. She is a young white girl with blonde hair possessing all the qualities of the vulnerable victim within the horror genre.
  • One the right there is an image of our main character Hannah, Hannah is also a teenager with blonde hair and has made fashion conscious decisions, which emphasises her vulnerability. Sartorial codes such as the choice of the flower print dress with a low neck line and accessories of a necklace. Her wavy hair is let down which could also indicate a laid back personality.
Setting/location

  • In order to reflect a sense of danger and change within the trailer we contrasted the the happy beginning and fatal end through the use of setting and lighting.
  • This concept is a common convention within the horror genre as the audience can relate to a normal happy life, the transition from the normal daily tasks of the victims to the scenes of fear and danger puts the audience on edge giving them a thrilling experience.
  • This is replicated in the trailer of 'Red eye', putting emphasis in change of lighting to show the contrast.

Sound

  • Our trailer uses the conventions of a horror trailer in terms of music, its light and happy start with the gradual build of darker more intense non-diegetic music builds tension and works in parallel to the increasing speed of shots.
  • This a conventional approach to using music within a horror trailer, the build up of tension is vital to make the audience anxious and excited for the film release.
  • We also used a voiceover for the trailer to give a clearer sense of narrative this is commonly done within movie trailers however it is not specific to the horror genre. We made the voiceover, of a small girls and used i movie to create a scary effect which relates back to our genre.

FILM POSTER

  • The film poster also presents conventions of real media products of both the horror genre and the conventions of any film poster.
  • Th name of the main in character is placed at the centre top of the poster to promote the movie with the actresses name and previous reputation in films.
  • The release date is positioned at the bottom of the poster, where it is usually placed next to the age certificate.
  • An ambiguos tag line is also placed on the poster which is typical of the horror genre to again create the feeling of anxiousness for the audience. This is done in many movie posters such as 'the uninvited'.

MAGAZINE COVER

  • The masthead of the magazine is mostly positioned at the very top of the magazine, which allows the name to be well recognised. Our film is mainstream therefore we decided to stay within the conventions.
  • Although we do not have a image in the centre of the magazine which is conventional approach, we decided to place our image on the right hand side to emphasise our narrative and genre.
  • We also used put side line to entice the readers to buy the magazine, however kept it close to the horror genre.
  • phrases such as 'All access interviews' are commonly used on magazine covers to draw in reader by offering the something in return.

Makeeha Ali - Question Two

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

It was vital for us to create a media product that performed and appeared as a package to the audience. We took into consideration when producing each product what links could be made in order to achieve this.

The image above demonstrates how we achieved to make all three products into one media package.

  • We used the unique 'Deception' sign on all three products to create a link and emphasise the genre through its reoccurrence.
  • The hand written title against the more formal font style indicates hidden secrets and a sense of false appearances. It is also used to reflect the idea of a child's handwriting, providing narrative hints of the significance of childhood memories.
I believe we effectively achieved to show a combination of our main text and ancillary products in terms of the film title, which will make it a recognisable logo for audiences.

  • The main image on the poster is the eye, which implies that the film is about stalking, or someone being watched.
  • We attempted to embed this idea into a magazine cover to create the same effect. However contrasting the bold central image of just the eye we decided to subtly give the same message by only showing half of Hannah's face which would draw attention to her one eye.
  • This idea is again replicated in our trailer, with the grain effect to make it appear as a personal camera and the strip at the bottom of the screen displaying the time, giving the impression someone is watching the girl.
  • We also placed the name of the main character on all three products: magazine cover, film poster and trailer.
  • The eye is prominently green on the film poster, to keep a link between our products we deeded to outline the text on the magazine cover with the same shade of green.
